when I get the courage to walk back out to my 112 degree garage (thats what it said on my thermo in there........lol) I'll take a look

It's on your transmission side cover, just above where the clutch cable goes into it. It takes a 3/8 allen wrench to take it out. You need to have the bike upright when you check it, and not on the kickstand. It's just the opposite from checking engine the oil. The engine oil you check it with it resting on the kickstand. That's how my 01 is anyway. I would think your 03 would be the same.
Oh also, when checking your trans. oil. You only put the little dipstick back in where it's resting against the threads, then check it. You don't have to screw it back in to check it.
