I just did the same thing on my wide glide (well switched bars anyway) the wire connectors are as these guys said right under the tank in the back bone of the frame covered by a plastic flap. the plastic flap is just held up the by a cuople of tabs on each side. You can actually remove the plastic cover fairly easily once you remove that by simple pulling it out you will find the wires and connectors in the back bone. There should be enough slack to pull them out of there and disconnect and go from there. I am not sure if you bike has the wires go thru the frame near the front by the fork if so removing the rubber grommets (one on each side of bike) helps to follow the wires as well to under the backbone as I previously stated. Good luck its fairly easy once you find the area I am speaking of. Take your time and cover things so you don't scratch anything very easy to do. Oh also i did mine with out removing the tank or even lifting its a little tricky but not to bad, I have a wide glide so not sure if its easier or harder on your bike?
