Default Gel in the seat?

I have a '11 Street Bob. The stock seat is okay for short trips, but over 150 miles, and it's not very good. Has anybody ever had gel put in the seat. My upholstery shop said they could shave out some of the foam and install gel. Just looking for imput on this. Thanks

The gel does improve the seat but that's just because the factory seat is so crappy that even a phonebook to sit on will probably be an improvement. If the price is right and you like the style of the factory seat then go for it.

I shipped my Vulcan 750 seat into Butt Buffer, out of PA, and they inserted a gel pad under stock covering. Worked great. My Ultra seat is good, but I am wondering if I should add gel to it , too.

Did you have any problems with the gel getting hard in the cold weather up there in WI? I've heard that can be an issue with gel inserts.

I got gel in my Danny Gray and they explained that the gel is beneath the foam so it wont matter if its firm or not in the cold. Its just a buffer for vibrations. To be honest, I can't tell its there. The seat isn't that much more comfortable than the stock seat in my opinion, it just looks cooler and cost a whole lot more.

You can cut out the foam with a utility blade and put a gel pad in yourself and save a bunch of money. The staples on the bottom of the seat material holding it to the seat pan are easily popped out and use self tapping screws to re-attach. I recently cut off some of the factory foam and made my Fat Bob seat more low profile where I sit and left the passenger area alone. Looks very good.

If you are thinking the stock seat is uncomfortable for you after only 150 miles, you may need to go to something like a mustang seat. I don't think gel will help you much if at all, and it does retain the heat if you park in the sun. You could try an air hawk cushion, mine adds another 100 miles or so comfort to my longer rides. For short rides, don't bother using it.

I cut some of the dense foam off my stock seat and added several layers of memory foam, reshaped for my riding position. Very comfortable and cost about $20.
