'03 FXD here. I remember the brochure stating that the Superglide was the perfect platform for customizing. I don't know if it's a better platform than touring models or softails, but from what I've been seeing on this site over the past couple of years I think it may be.
Though we Harley owners are tempted to add a Softail or a Road King to our stable, I decided a long time ago when I get a hankerin' for another one, instead of forking out a bunch of money for a new one I'll just customize the one I have a little more. Over the last 8 years I've added a new front end, have 3 different seats depending on my mood, chromed out the primaries, added pony express bags when I travel, changed out the shocks, the bars, the wheels, the tank , the headlight, the horn cover, the airfilter cover...the list goes on. Compared to some on this site I've only scratched the surface. My Road King riding partner (who beleives keeping a bike original vs customizing it) points out that for the amount of money I put into my ride I could buy another. He's not exactly right, but not to far off the price of a used softeail ( I can't tell you how many great deals I've gotten off Craigslist and Ebay). But here's the deal. I have a unique bike, unique to me and my taste and one I could not have bought from Harley. And it's a work in progress, so I get to spend my time thinking about what I want to do next, and doing most of it myself. I get a lot of pleasure out of that. Oh, and I don't have to talk about how it handles, you all know there is no better handling big twin Harley out there (except maybe the FXR I've read so much about). I don't need another Harley. I didn't know it when I bought it, but it's the one I always wanted.

Wife has an 06'

Grandpa had an 06'. He passed away at age 80 last October. He put 20,000 miles on his 06....he was too young for a bagger.

Hello All, I have an '06 FXDi. Good, Durable, Relyable! First thing I put on it was an oil cooler. Read somewhere that could more than double te service life of the engine. then came wind screen, fwd controls, passing (running) lights, saddle bags, engine guards, V&H big guns, S E air cleaner, GEEeees!!! I should have got a Road King Classic!! Still might, Heh Heh Heh. but, I'll never get rid of my Superglide with 111,000 miles on it. :-)
