I hear a slight ping once in a while from 2011 fdxc. It happens when I roll on it hard. It is very brief and barely noticeable. I'm now wondering if it is really some mechanical noise and not pinging. And everyone has missed shift here and there and knows that awful sound from heavy knocking of the engine. Don't want to do that for very long indeed! The sound I hear might well be describwd as a metallic "tick" I suppose. Hmmm.

I just put a Dakota Digital speedo on mine, it's a quality unit. IMO, a DD guage has nothing to do with being a newbie or not, I like the clean look of it as apposed to the factory speedo. Mine also makes the sewing machine noise, always has. I agree with most others that mine likes to be in the 3K range, less noise and vibration.

You newbies make me laugh, http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...icon_laugh.gif throwing money at your bike, instead of reading your owners manual and learning how to ride your bike properly. RTFM! It tells you when to shift (using your speedo). And just listening to your motor should give you a small clue. LOL!
I may be wrong but doesn't the owners manual tell you to shift at lower speeds than I am going now??? I do read all available info owners manual. service manual and this forum. I'll be sure and post up some pics when I get the tach installed.

I have a tach, use the hell out of it, one of the best things ihave put on my bike... when that light turns green by just "listening" to my bike i may shift early and miss the power band of the next gear thus slowing down my lauch and shifts = slower time... i watch my tach all the way though... it works, line up next to me and ill show ya :icon_naughty:

You shift at the speeds recommended in the owners manual?

Damn...you really need to learn how to ride your bike. Maybe some of the "newbies" can help ya' out. :icon_imnotworthy:

I'll help you out. Stay in 4th til 55/60 mph. Especially up a hill.

Yes, it does indeed. The owners manual actually has you shifting into 6th at 55MPH for example. Of course, that's completely insane.

If you up all of your shift points by 10MPH you'll most likely be good to go. I'm pretty much doing this on a daily commute:

2nd @ 25
3rd @ 35 or 40
4th @ 45 or 50
5th @ 60 or 65
6th @ 75 or higher/cruising with no traffic

6th is basically useless unless you have a 30 tooth tranny pulley at speeds below 70mph, especially with traffic and hills. The 30 tooth tranny pulley essentially ups your RPMs a bit making 6th more usable but causing you to shift earlier in the lower gears, obviously.

Here are some not so scientific test results I did a while ago.

I have a stock 2009 FXDL except for the Rush slip-ons.

At 60 MPH in 6th Gear - 2000RPM
At 65 MPH in 6th Gear - 2200RPM
At 75 MPH in 6th Gear - 2800RPM
At 80 MPH in 6th Gear - 3000RPM

At the lower speeds there is simply no passing power. It feels like you are starting out from a stop in 3rd gear. The question is would you cruise around at 2200 RPM? I find the bike runs best at about 3000 RPM.

Here is a long thread on the subject for other opinions.

This one is starting to be one too!

Wring that scooters neck. Unless you are constantly bouncing off of the rev-limiter you are not hurting it. It is a tool not a jewel!
