Default Drag Bars = Back Pain?

Ok I have a 08 FXDC and am looking at trading the buckhorns for some drag bars. I am certain they will improve the look but what about the reach? I am somewhat vertically challenged at a towering 5.7". My concern is that 6" pullback risers will not be enough and I will be constantly fighting back pain. Any input?

I have lower back issues and for me, installing the FXDL bars (not far from a DB) on the stock (1.86") risers was worlds better than the stock bars. Everyone is different though - try what you like and adjust as needed.

Stock (5 inches) fatbob bars killed my back, putting them at 6 inches, only made it slightly better. Mini apes was/is so much more comfortable but I'm 6'3. I was always leaning forward to reach my bars. Apes gives you adjustability, drag bars don't have much to adjust

I am 6ft and have 4 inch straight risers on Kuryakyn Drags bars, and with forwards my back hurt but I switched to mid controls and the same bar/riser combo fits great now. They look damn good in my opinion but I will be also trying a set of HD Mini Apes as well. Gonna try something new to try and find the elusive perfect setup for me

Yes, for me and everyone else I have know they do. But with the right set up and risers, it may be best for YOU.

It may be a trial and error prospect for you.

I knew I was not comfortable with my mini apes on my FXDWG.

I tried a set of Wild One Chubby 501 handlebars. They lowered my arms and brought my hands back enough for me to be happier. I am about your same height.

There was another set I was considering but these came along first and the price was decent.

Best of luck with your search!

Here are a couple of cool comparison gifs -

My stock cables from my Wide Glide with stock mini apes were a bit too long when I switched to the 501's.

I would suggest new (shinny) cables and such.

I was almost overwhelmed with the selection of handlebars out there. I knew I wanted that style of bar I ended up with so that helped to narrow the field somewhat. I also knew I wanted to run my wiring internal to the handlebars so that helped narrow the search as well. There are still lots of choices in design as well as finishes. You could also get some custom bars as well.

The Carlini Super Sweep is another popular choice.

I think the big problem for me was not having anything to compare against each other and actually sit on a bike and feel the differences.

Did you have to have any bushings or dampers installing these wild one bars?

I went from 10" mini apes on my WG, had back pain with them coupled with numb hands all the time, went to cheapo 8" drag bars and hands feel great now but back pain is still there. Haven't installed the windshield back on yet so maybe that'll help with the back.
