Had the same symptoms. Stator went out a week later.

 

jeff -- how many miles on your bike when the stator went...?

 

Sounds like the rev limiter to me. I have a tach and when it touches the red line the motor runs [but sputters] and just stays at that rpm with no increase in speed. Little scary when I passed a car and another one was coming in the opposite direction. Shifting of course cured the problem.

 

Like everyone said you are bouncing off the rev limiter. You need to get a tuner to raise it to 6200.
