They can hold moisture.
I have seen many pipes corrode and break because of them.

I Say Go For It !!!
I started wrapping my pipes 5 years ago. I also have the heat shields mounted over the header wrap. A lot cooler this way
1. My pipes are still in great shape...No Rust or Cracks
2. They will turn Blue and Gold...almost to the mufflers
3. I replace the wraps every 2 years....15,000miles a year

ALL BS! the issues above happen 1 in like 1000000.... i have wrapped over 30 sets of pipes for customers and my own rides... 0 issues...
soak it in water for 10 min prior to wrapping, wear gloves it is fiberglass... over lap layers by 1/2... after you have it on there, put the pipes back on and let the bike run... it will smoke and smell like crap! but just let her go, this will dry and tighen the wrap as the moisture is burned out...
the issues listed above are only on motors that are making a huge amount of power where subtle heat changes can have dramatic effects! your pipes are plenty long enouhg to dispense heat and are not full of bents and twists. wrap em you will be fine!
listed right above is spot on though... the wrap should be replaced ever 20,000 miles or so... if you watn it to stay dark or black, i would sugest shooting the wrap with 1200 paint after it is dry and cured. i also never wrap pipes alone... always have another person help me so i can get it layered right and nice and tight...
just wrapped another bike last week man
