Just put the k&n filter in. No reason to drill holes in the box. The k&n will give you mire flow. If you have stock pipes you will hear a difference.

Hey Antman!

Gotta like a guy that thinks like me! I did this several months ago using a 1/2" wood-boring bit. Drilled holes only at front and back of airbox - none at the top where water/foreign objects might drop in, and none facing the motor to limit engine heat mixing in with air intake. Hard to measure performance improvement, but figured it can't hurt. Good luck!

By doing this, you do not actually increase air flow into the throttle body, by cutting holes in the front and the back, you just opened the box and gave the air a way to escape out the back door.
Just my $.02 FWIW

gotta agree with this.I had a buddy with a Honda VTX1300 a few years back.Drilled holes all around it and it seemed to run worse. We started plugging holes till we started seeing a difference...ended up with only several in the front of the air cleaner.

Yep, I considered that before punching out the backing plate, that I might lose out on the "forced-air induction" effect. But I thought by increasing the number of air intake openings it would help improve overall airflow into the TBI unit. No matter, I'm only out the backing plate and there are plenty of take-offs on ebay I can get for a replacement. Or, I can always go out and get a REAL air cleaner! Ride safe, guys!

It is the filter itself which allows for more air, but if you already drilled holes that's ok too! Look at the arlen ness, or the screaming eagle, full open exposure right? no need for ram air effect!
