It kinda sounded like something was hitting something, like a rattle (more than a ticking), and it obviously changed speed as the bike did. That's why I orginally thought something had come loose in the horn due to it vibrating so much.
If the bike has not been riding for awhile (ie weeks), l have had lifters to bleed down and will make the valve train very noisy at start up and will remain that way until sufficient oil pressure/temp is developed. I had a set of SE lifters (aka Jims lifters) that were prone to do that. With regular riding they would not bleed down. Just keep watchin and listening.

Ok,

For all those who are interested.

Took the bike in to the Indy shop that I work in and obviously it wouldn't make any of the strange noises. I left after a days work, got 5 mins down the road and it started playing up, turned around went back and shouted 'see! look! I told you!'. It's now in the shop being looked at and I should find out tonight what the problem is.

I also noticed that the bike doesn't have a Stage 1 air filter kit on it. The original owner put the K&N filter in the stock cover without changing the backplate etc. What a douche.

I chased phantom ticking on my '10 Street Bob for the first 4 months I owned her. I had Klotz synthetic primary fluid, and changed it back to the formula+ HD stuff and it seemed to die down considerably. First bike, brand new, I was paranoid about even the slightest rattle or tick.

Hey 50cal, your noise sounds like a classic pre-detonation, I would change gas brands staying with a national brand and maybe run some seafoam thru the fuek/combustion chambers. You said it happens when you do a roll on accal, does it make the noise when you downshift? Is it one up or two on board? Sorry about hijacking the thread.

Why don't you upload a video clip to YouTube and link it for us? Kind of hard to respond without hearing it. Probably normal.

SeniorsuperglideE8, the "tinging" does not happen on downshift. It happens on one or two up, any gear, no lugging the engine. I use Chevron 93 octane. The "tings" come at no regular rhythm. Thanks for your input.

Hey 50cal, if your bike is still "tinging", see if there is a plug under the intake that happens to be just tickling the cooling fins. Seen it a few times now. The plug is not used on non-CA bikes. If it lays slightly against the cyl. cooling fins it makes a high pitch "tingle" when the motor vibrates. It's suprisingly loud.
