Go for it! I did mine and it turned out OK, still needs a good buff though. There are flaws but I learned something and believe I can do much better next time.

Damn fine feeling isn't it? I moved from a very large John Deere dealership (RDO Equipment) to a locally owned industrial hose distributor it's NICE. RDO is a good company but the politics got old.

I used a quart of clear when I did mine, I have a very nice shiny spot about 2 1/2' in diameter on my garage floor where I spilled it!!!!

On a custom truck we did, we put 6 coats of clear on it (normal wet-on-wet double coat, cure, scuff, and other WoW double coat, cure, scuff, one more WoW double coat, cure, buff). Looks awesome and is holding up surprisingly well.

They don't offer the flat look you are after, but it might be of intrest to some others that are thinking about painting there own rides! Duplicolor makes this great set up that allows the DYI'r to paint with out having to worry about bad mixing, all you need is good prep. Check it out.

There is a guy, Spray can Dan. He has instructional DVD's on how to custom paint motorcycles with rattle cans. I'm going to do my scoot as soon as I can keep my garage temp over 65.

Doing so, and doing it well, is so much more difficult than doing it with a spray gun, I can't imagine why anyone would choose this route.

I'd wet sand with 600G wet-or-dry. You can apply a thin coat of primer or sealer to improve adhesion and hold-out a little but it's not absolutely necessary. If it were me I probably would.

EDIT: When sanding be sure not to use your fingertips. You can induce little hills and valleys if you use your fingertips. Keep the sandpaper flat on the surface and use the palm of your hand. Even better is a thin sanding pad to wrap the sandpaper around.

DIY man. I did my 97 Lowrider with Rustoleum non textured bed liner out of a spray can. It's not fancy, but I am happy with it and it is very durable.
