I'll give it a go...But mind you it's more of a guess.

DLK791776
D: Model? This part has me... A 'GD' designation here would be a Dyna Low Rider FXDL.
L: Engine displacement=1340 Evolution
K: Model year=1989
791776: Sequential Number

Does this sound right?

thanks for the reply it's a twin cam 1450 and after some digging found out its a 04 low the stealer says you can't tell by the numbers but by the shape of the front of the cases they were a great help

Doesn't sound right ...

DL should be the model [there is no DL]
K is Kansas City assembly plant
791776 is serial number

Did the guy say '04 "Low Rider" ...? or 'Lo' ...? (Fat Boy Lo was introduced in '10 ....)

The shape of the cases (only the front is visible, unless separated from the transmission) will be a dead giveaway as to whether you have an 88A or 88B (B - counterbalanced) .... The shape of the cam chest would be a dead giveaway as to whether you had a Twin Cam or an Evo (Evolution 1340cc/80ci) ....

Is the motor powdercoated black or silver (sometimes referred to as 'blonde') ...?

You got a carbureted or fuel injected motor ...?

This is what an '04 Low Rider looks like (note the black motor and transmission cases) ....

ENGINE CHARACTERISTICS:
Engine Air-cooled Twin Cam 88® (vibration isolation-mounted)
Valves Pushrod-operated overhead valves; w/ hydraulic
self-adjusting lifters; two valves per cylinder
Bore x Stroke 3.75 x 4.0 in. (95.18 x 101.52 mm)
Displacement 88 cu. in. (1450 cc)
Compression Ratio 8.9:1
Fuel System: Carburetion or Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)

* * *

Maybe you could post a couple of photos of it ....
