Default does chrome have to be stripped to powder?

Does chrome have to be chemically stripped or bead blasted to powder coat? or can you just scuff if with sandpaper?

Thanks! I am buying a $200 gun off the internet to do some small stuff on my bike (belt guard, switches, air cleaner, etc.) and just needed to know what to do with the chrome before I shoot it!

I went over all my chrome with a DA sander using 80 grit paper. That was 5 years ago and it has held up fine. Not sure if it make a difference , but all my powder is flat or satin.

I've done a ton of powder coating on my bikes and I don't do anything to the chrome and never had any problems.

I had chrome rims powdercoated black on my car. The powdercoater bead blasted the wheels and smoothed them out with some sanding before the powder went on. I would think that sand blasting might pit the chrome to deep to even sand back out.

But to the original poster, you can have the part stripped first but will cost you more money. Really the most important part is the condition of the chrome. If the chrome is free of deep pitting, flaking, etc most places will prep and powder them for you. But if the chrome is in bad condition you will most likely be referred to a chrome stripping shop first and bring the part back when stripped.
