Since I can't ride the bike for several months every winter I take the battery out and store it in a freeze proof place, plug the pipes, wrap the AC with plastic, add Stabil, change the oil, cover the bike, shut off the lights and say goodnight. I do use a battery tender on my vette if I have to let it sit for more then 2 weeks and it works great.

I like keeping mine ready to ride on the ocassional 'warm day'... all I do to winterize mine is plug it in & leave it on the charger.

Battery Tender JR. for my Street Bob and Battery Tender for my Mustang. Both work great and both start up like a warm summer day! The JR is only like 25 bucks from Eastern Performance. Leave them plugged in all year long.

I bought a 1.5 amp Schumacher battery charger at Advance Auto. Works great.

I have the DieHard version from Sears. They run about $30 retail but go on sale a couple of times a year around $20. I have one on my lawn tractor too. You can see it here:

I bought the Schumacher like Piginablanket for one of my employees. Found it at Wally World for $22. He says it works great.
