Leather chaps and jackets

+1 Try not to get too tied up in "more money = better quality." You can buy 7 good quality X-Element jackets for what 1 Schotts or Langlitz jacket costs. Asphalt doesn't give a crap what brand your jacket is, when they meet, chances are you'll be buying another one.

I started over twenty-five years ago with A2 copy leather jackets from L.L. Bean. Excellent quality. When I outgrew the first one I bought a second and also a third, one insulated with 3M Thinsulate. They're extremely well-made jackets, they hold up through the decades, and the insulated one is unbelievably warm (you can hardly wear it when you're not moving, I almost always take it off when I get off the bike!)
They're very "1940s" which works for me, I love the practicality and the look. They're not the most "flexible" jacket, I'd take mine off before I got into a barroom fight for example. But they're tough (goat leather) and oh so durable.
