Need Tach suggestions
#11
I bought a $70 tach earlier this year that came with the needed single fire adapter. I assume I wired it correctly, but the needle bounced around so much (like 2,000 RPM bounces) that I was better at guessing the RPM's than the instrument.
I took it off the next day and rode without. I finally splurged and bought the Dakota Digital speedo/tach. Wow! What an instrument! 0 to 60 times, 1/4 mile times, high RPM's, digital tach and speedo, engine temp and whatever else is available at the touch of a button.

THANKS for the reply, now that is data to make me think hard about this.
That is a lot of goodies packed into the Dakota package. Does it also show "each" gear instead of just N and 6 like OEM?
Seems everything always comes down to money and the lack of it. But with this data I'm thinking I would be better off just going without a tach until I can afford a good one.
Anybody else have problems with tachs under a $100 ?

RPM (in 500 RPM increments)
Speedometer (MPH or KPH)
Each Gear
Odometer (You can self-program current mileage ONCE within the first 100 miles of use)
Trip A
Trip B
Miles to Next Service (You can input it to auto remind you to get service every 500-7500 miles)
KPH (shows KPH if you are using MPH or vice versa)
Current Voltage (has a warning function you can program)
Highest Speed
0-60 Time
1/4 Mile Time
1/4 High Speed
Clock
Resettable Hours meter
RPM in full display
Highest RPM
Engine Temperature (has a warning function you can program)
You can also set it up to auto adjust your speedo reading if you have changed anything that will affect accurate readings.
Some of this stuff takes a little programming to get it all working, but all told it took me maybe 45 min from unit in the box, to fully programmed and loving it.

Thanks for the very complete listing. Now I'm like a kid with the Christmas catalog.

Oh ok my mistake, I was thinking of a temp reading, but actually what you were referring to a warning alert, which I checked my parts manual and the Dynas do indeed have a heat sensor that the ECM uses for it's EFI maps.
Yes this thing is difinitely the way to go, but don't know when I will actually purchase it though. One thing for sure, I have you guys to thank, that I won't be spending any money on any other tach.
Very much appreciated input ! Oh and does either the red or blue color show up ok in the sun ? Is one better than the other ?

Oh, and that digital tach is soo nice! That default bar tach is useless, but the digital one is awesome.
