Default Drive Belt Broke

I have a 98 dyna motor is pumped up a little. I was riding the other day and all of the sudden no more belt. Belt probably has 65,000 miles pre build and 6,000 post pumped up motor. Just put on a new tire about 500 miles ago also. The belt has had a very small surface knick in the center of belt for 5,000 plus.
Just wanted to know is this standard for a belts life and should I replace both pullies or can I get away with just doing the belt?

Thanks

Check your pulleys real good to make sure there are no burrs that will cut the belt, or any abnormal wear. Replace the belt check your alignment and ride!.. If your belt had a cut in it already it sounds like you were already riding on borrowed time anyway.

Replace everything, why take the chance? The belt has a LOT of tension on it and even the smallest knick or crack can cause failure. Last thing you want is to be far away from home when the $100+ belt you just put on snaps again! The newer belts are made for 100,000 miles, not sure about the older ones though.

The older ones were good for 50,000.The new belts are around $240.

Check rear pulley to see if it passes scratch test on the hard chrome coating as specified in manual. If it does not, replace it even though the teeth look good. I have 95 HP dyna and i ate up one pulley at 35,000 miles. Replaced with new take off pulley off ebay for $30. Belt still going strong and looks like new at 52,000. Can order belt much cheaper by ordering from one of the 20% off dealers.

Ok, I can't seem to find the scratch test. I don't see any chrome on the teeth though. Is that bad? Its not a chrome pulley though, it's just powder coated rough aluminum. Don't know if that matters.

Thanks

you're not alone and you do have options... check out this thread that's going on right now over at the "general discussion" forum..

Your call, but it's at least worth looking into a chain conversion...
