Pretty obvious difference. One has a bigger motor and extra highway gear. Bigger motor=more power=faster. Extra gear=lower highway RPM's. Both bikes are plenty fast out of the box, but if the price is pretty close between the two, go for the 96.

a bigger question would be EFI or carbs IMO. I went from a 96 EFI to an 88 that has a carb. EFI is the best option unless you like to "Tinker" a lot..

I prefer 88.

Shorter stroke....like to rev better.

That said 88's, at least 2005 and older need gear driven cam conversion or '06+ cam chain setups.

6th gear is nice, but not necessary....5 speeds work fine. Hell, there are guys still riding 4 speed bikes all across the country.

MINT 2005 Dyna Superglides can be picked up for a song. Change out the cam setup, and RIDE.

2006 was an oddball year. The engine was a new design, and there are some one year only parts in them.

I recommend 2004-2005 dyna with gear driven cams (and upgrade to TIMKEN cam bearings)and chromoly adjustable pushrods personally.
