Black-Out Conundrum

You can have a beautiful bike. . . either way.
I like the black and chrome balance you have now, and that's how I have my bike in a lot of ways, with a blance of black and chrome.
Then again at the local dealer (Central Texas Harley Davidson in Round Rock) there's a completely blacked out Pollce edition Road King on the floor (for like 27 thousand dollars!) that looks absolutely AMAZING. If I weren't "retired" and in love with my Fat Bob I'd be talking to them about it. . . it really spoke to me.

CRF..
I think all black worked for Johnny Cash. All any one color looks boring to me...ya gotta have some contrast/counterpoint IMHO.
I really like red Harleys with the silver motor...bitchin'. That's not what I own, just what I think looks great.
I saw a chopper in dragonfly green with brass fittings and I was mesmerized. Damn, it was beautiful.
My prediction is this all black thing fades out by the end of 2011 when the next big marketing plan comes along.

I epoxied my headlight ring and signals (whick have the run, brake conversion wire kit). Then flat blacked my battery band, and shock covers top and bottom leaving coils silver.
Plan on epoxy coating lower arms this winter.
Have chrome pipes and chrome 16" apes. I think its a good combo for now but may go more black too!

I really think if you do the front lowers in black the bike would be even more kick a$$ than it already is. Would still give you a nice balance.

I'm in agreement with the people who say "balance". A little black goes a long way. Just keep some pieces chrome, and black out other stuff around them.
My philosophy with buying the FXD with its powdercoated engine was that I'd black out stuff around the engine, which makes it stand out more... I'll never go completely all black. Just blacker than it was new.
As for the shocks, do what I did: paint 'em! That's right... I hand-painted the springs. Stole an art brush from my daughter (she was pissed) got some oil-based, gloss-black Rustoleum, and went at it. Took about two beers per spring. You'll notice that I kept the top and bottom parts chrome. I did them about three years ago, and the finish still looks great... no chipping at all. (it's gotta be oil-based)
