I hate windshields

Wow, those Va. laws are a bit on the harsh side. Here in NJ, they have a Careless Driving ticket (2 pts) and a Reckless Driving ticket (8 pts). The first one is a catch-all that they throw at you if they can't figure out what else to write you for. The second one is serious. Takes quite a bit to meet the test for a Reckless Driving ticket.

Did a short hop (400 mile r/t) this weekend down to Md. to see my mom and my sister. Took the long way home through York and Harrisburg. Having my Q/R shield on the bike sure helped as I saw a couple BIG bugs get pushed over the top. One was not so lucky though. The sucker hit just a little left of center, chest high. I have no idea WTF it was, but it was pretty damned big. He made such a loud smack when he hit, that it startled me. Main splat ring was probably 3" - 4" across. Wearing just a long sleeve T-shirt, I'm sure that sucker would have left a bruise if it hit me in the chest! This was the second decent highway run that I've done since I put it on and I'm pretty much sold.
I ride most of the summer without ... I occasionally feel a few smaller bug strikes ... but, I have never gotten huge bugs strike in the head or torso .... I suppose your body must create a high pressure immediately to your front that will 'blow' a lot of bugs slightly off course ...?
I have gotten some pretty good bug splats on the fairing and windshield, though ....
Interesting that I have never gotten that chest bruise from a bug, yet ....

I've never had a bruise from a bug, and a lot of bugs have thudded against me at speed, and some darned big ones. I've never had a windshield.
This summer I've taken quite a few big bugs to the head. Four really that I can remember. Two hit me in the nose, one on the tip, one on the bridge. They both hurt, but didn't leave a mark. Big bugs too. One was on the upper lip, which hurt too. The one on the chin, not so much.
Maybe I'm just tough? I don't think of myself that way, but I do have stamina and some fortitude. But to me, the joy of the wind, sun, light rain, bugs, sand and grit. . . it's part of why I ride. To be really right there out in it, smelling, breathing, seeing, hearing, feeling.

I hit a dragonfly a few months back....right on my chest going 70+. I only had a long sleeve T-shirt on because it was 95 degrees. As soon as it hit, I knew it was going to leave a mark. Battle scar.
99% of the time, I don't want a windshield near my bike. If I can find a cheap used one, I'll try it out.....we'll see.
