Put a nut on the allen bolt so you don't mess up the threads before cutting. I used a cut off wheel.
I used a liberal amount of wd-40, tried polishing the bolt threads with my dremel, but in the end I end up cutting off a small piece of the bolt with my Dremel.

I broke a wrench and nearly my hand when it snapped and I hit the motor with my knuckle.

Don't worry about the 3-threads part, as long as the plates can sit flush on their mounting surface, w/o the setscrews lifting them. If they must go deeper, just run a tap through, first.
