Default Removing Heat wrap...what to expect?

I am planning on removing the heat wrap that i have run on my thunderheader for the past 2k miles.
What is the best method to do this? Soak it in water or remove it dry.
What can I expect my pipes to look like? Will I need to have them recoated or painted with hi temp paint.

Thanks

Mat

What you can expect is the finish is probably going to be fubar.

Yup.....that's what I was thinking : (

Any idea how to remove it? Is it easier to remove wet or dry?

I removed my last year. I just removed them dry, no problem. My pipes were alright looking, but I just blacked out my chrome heat shields and put them back on.

You can take it off wet or dry. Doesn't matter.

Be prepared though. Your pipes will be trashed. I bought a set of pipes from a guy who wrapped them. When I took it off they were pitted and the finish had some rust. No biggie though because I just cleaned em up and hit them with some black BBQ paint.

Yeah, the heat wrap looks real gnarly! Was hoping that the black heat wrap would remain black, but all of the dye ran while i was wrapping my pipes, so now it looks dirty off white.

why are you removing? you should paint heatwrap after install with some DEI black paint. It keeps the wrap black. So if your just removing cause the wrap looks bad, you could just repaint the wrap and it will look good. Should you remove, the finish underneath will be fubar as stated. You can just remove the wrap dry.

I paint my black heat wrap about every six months of so with flame proof header paint and it looks great. takes no time. Just mask off the bike and spray it.
