Lowering the rear

Lowering the rear
Okay, we aren't talking about my rear-end; its low enough already, thanks.
However, in order for me to be able to reacth the ground, we are definitley going to lower the rear on our 1982 low rider. My mechanic, who is also a close friend and Harley owner as well, is convinced he can lower it 3 inches or more. The b/f is concerned with handling issues and scraping parts on turns.
It is in its original state right now, it hasn't been lowered at all. Any ideas on the most reasonable amount to lower it without risking the feel and handling??
All answers are appreciated.

RE: Lowering the rear
Can't say for sure, but I'd be real skeptical about lowering the back end by that much, may not even be possible without major surgery on the fender, etc. There isn't 3" of clearance under the fender/tire without cutting up the fender. Sorry I can't be of more help, but 3" seems like a long shot.

RE: Lowering the rear
Lowering the rear only does strange things to the handeling of the bike because it changes the geometry of the front end in relation to the ground (rake and trail). One inch at the most would not prove to be a problem,. Why not consider a change of seat ( the bikes) which would put you lower on the bike without changing th ride height of the bike.
