Default Changing shifter linkage

Just got my new stainless adjustable shifter linkage from bung king. Really nice part. So does the trans have to be in a certain gear before i take off stock shifter linkage? Also some have said the adjustablility aspect makes for smoother shifting. How so ??

It doesn't matter if the trans is in gear or not. You can just remove your old shift rod and adjust the new one to match the length to start with.
