Something that I've found works well is a 5 or 6 foot length of plastic coated 1/8th or 3/16th cable, with Nicro loops on the ends and a padlock. Not so much for bike events, but anywhere you might not want to carry your jacket and helmet around. Run the cable through the sleeve of your jackets, through whatever loop thing you've got on your helmets, and then around some part of the bike like the down tube or swing arm. Cinch it up tight and padlock it all together, but leave the cable and padlock visible. Hope the next theif that comes around isn't carrying a set of clippers 'cause that's all it would take to cut it. But as usual, it helps keep the honest people honest. It's a compact set up you can carry in a jacket pocket, and I've never lost anything in 40 years of bikin'.
That's the best by far - I'd worry over a jacket more than a lid. Mine is a black nov lid sanded with 400 grit now and then, so doesn't look like much.
I liked the crash bar lock too - not too obtrusive. Unfortunately, you CAN fix a cut strap, so I would never have an expensive lid.
I think you cut down the chances of your lid being stolen if you paint a distinctive marking on it. Anyone who steals it knows you might find them later....
I borrowed the idea from someone from on this board of using a set of handcuffs from the strap to the frame. I guarantee few people are going to try to cut the strap when they see those handcuffs.
"Most" of the time things are fine left behind. But I always go with the "trust nobody" theory if it's something that I really need or don't want stolen.
which rally you going too was in laconia no one touched my helmet but there is a no helmet law. i would leave the wife cuffed to the bike to protect the helmets dont give her to much chain she might get tangled in other bikes.
just wondering....... is it legal to carry handcuffs around if you are not a LEO?
when I decided to use handcuffs..I went to the police station to see if I could buy some from them.
they told me their handcuffs were 'issused' and therefore could not sell me any.
It must be legal for me to have them because the policeman gave me the name of a store where I could buy some. ( Army Surplus) they had many new sets available.
