Welcome from Va. I think you made a great choice and a wise decision to get what you wanted straight off. What I did was find a big empty lot and just practice turns left and right from a stopped position. Then I did emergency stops. I had less riding background than you do so this may not be necessary for you. Practicing until you feel really comfortable with the bike, and its weight, handling, stopping before you get out into traffic is important. You'll know when your ready Good Luck to you.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on getting the FXDC! It's a great bike. My recommendation is a no-brainer -- take it easy at the onset, as you familiarize yourself with how your bike handles. Practice Search - Evaluate - Execute all of the time. Periodically, practice some of the exercises from the course, like slow riding and turning in small spaces. Stay safe.
