That's one of the reasons they call them Stealers and not Dealers! Buy the bike that YOU want, not what ANYONE else wants you to buy. As everyone else said, you won't use the 6 gear under 65 mph. It is great for cruisin' down the interstate and long open roads. Tim

Well, how cool is that? You folks are all great, thanks so much for the advice.....the '07 Dyna Low Rider is going to be the one....I'm 6ft 2in, so first thing is getting forward controls put on, then the stage 1 after the break-in period....I'm gonna do the fuel tank lift as well.....then whitewalls when the tires need replacing

you all have made my day

I agree with everyone. In city traffic you may never get out 3'rd gear. Buy what you want and be happy with it.

I am new to this forum, and thinking of buying a new low-rider this winter, but I heard (from a hd parts guy) that HD 6 speed is not a true “over drive” it’s 1:1 ? my FXS is a 4 speed, the 3rd gear is the best ratio for lots of types of riding IMO, anyway back on topic, is this true ? if it is why ? do they just want to sell a screaming eagle 6 speed ?

Thanks for any info,

cj

Hmm, when I'm on the road seems I can't ever have enough gears.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I was referring to the 6th gear ratio I did find out on a HD press release that their 6 speed does cut the rev's down a little.

<"The 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, which was introduced on the Dyna family in 2006, features gear ratios optimized to match the torque curve of the new Twin Cam 96/96B engines. The addition of a higher-ratio sixth gear reduces top-gear rpm by 11 percent, compared to the previous 5-speed Big Twin transmission. At 75 mph, engine speed is reduced by 368 rpm, from 3227 rpm to 2859 rpm. Second through fourth gears have helical-cut teeth for quieter operation, and load carrying capacity has been increased significantly.">

So I guess the HD parts counter guy was right it's only a 1:1 ratio, a true over drive is about .86:1 ratio, still I guess all in all, almost a 400 rpm drop is something, but I will not gain too much over my 4 speed doing 3,000 + rpm at 70 mph I would personally like to see it drop into the mid 2,000 range, makes 6 hrs trips a bit better on the engine, gas and me !

I wonder if this dealer will be telling all his customers buying '07 models with six speeds about that pesky extra shifting... what a tool!

I could be a poor sport (or a long time HD owner) and say “every other dealer will” but I think I am giving the 50% a little too much credit : - )

Most likely will buy early next year (feb.) I’ll tell you then, what I get off them, “Wow ! you mean HD is putting in a true 6 Speed now ? !!!” can’t wait to I see the Dog & Pony show !
