Default can you take swirls out of chrome?

gave the bike a good douching yesterday, cleaned off about a week's worth of bugs and grime.

while wiping my pipes down i got a little over zealous with a wad of nevr-dull trying to take a burnt on piece of dirt off.

i put some nice swirl marks in the chrome.

granted you have to have them pointed out to you and then get down in a crouch to look and see them when the sun hits just right...

but i know they're there.

anything gonna take these out?

I've heard of people using 2000 grit sand paper and wet-sanding chrome, then using a very light buffing compound.

But I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. Bright Chrome isn't all that tough, unlike industrial chrome. And it's usually not on very thick at all.

I'd leave it alone.

You could try some chrome polish and gently work it in over the swirls, but only go in a length wise direction to try and get the, for a lack of a better term, "grain" going in a single direction. It is the reflection and if the scratches are going in a long single direction it does not show up quite as much. I use a chrome polish by Amway that is actually a powder, you would think it would scratch the crap out of the chrome, but it is the best polish I have used. Just wipe the cake with a damp sponge and polish away.
The best way I have removed burnt on crap is using WD-40 and an old micro fiber towel. something soft and something with solvent to break the crap down. The 2 problems are using a coarse cloth which will scratch and even with a soft cloth, the crap you are taking off gets into it and can also scratch the chrome, you have to sneak up on it.

Another tip for getting gunk off is an old credit card. You can scrape tar, burnt plastic, boot soles, whatever off without worrying about messing up the chrome. Once the big stuff is gone NevRDull or any chrome cleaner can be used more gently to finish up.

Of course there's always the oven cleaner trick tho I've personally never tried it.

Chrome plating usually quite porous and as stated earlier unless it is industrial chome plated quite easily damaged. Leave it as is for now as it is likely you will polish away the plating further and make it even more obvious. Keep an eye on rust now.
