I always put 2 quarts or so in. got for my road test and then check it while hot on the side stand. I only usually have to add half a quart or so. I never fill them to the top of the corss hatch marks. always a little below it.

Stupid question, when you check the oil, do you thread the cap all the way back in, or do you just set it on the top, and does the bike need to be standing up, or on the stand.

It could be just in the tank. Run it some and let the filter get full then check it.

Always check it hot. Even if you have to go ride it around the block before checking.
I make a habit of checking mine every time I come home. I park it in the same place. I have a little cubbyhole it just fits into with enough room lean it over and walk along side it.
I keep a wipe towel right where I have to see it when I park to remind me.
Just put down the J-stand lean it over and screw out the dipstick wipe and screw it back in then out again to check the level.
It's the closest you're gonna get to the proper oil level that way.
Mine usually takes right at 2-3/4 qts when I change it along with the filter. I figure a 1/2 pt. is in the oil galleries seeing how I always warm the motor before draining.
