Default 1996 wide glide engine rebuilt

Hello.
I have checked the bike that Im planning to buy and the mechanic suggested to do a engine rebuilt.
The bike is only 10 years....how you can damage an engine so fast ???.
The thing is the owner take my old restored 65Dart GT as part of the bike price (I don't have all the money to buy the bike).
My question is, can I reuse some of the engine parts to do the rebuilt?, or should I change everything (heads, camshaft, crakshaft, valves, cylinders, etc).
Thanks for any help.

I have a '95 Glide, I havent touched the engine, except for regular service. I would suggest ride the bike, and see what you want to do to it. If it seems tight and functions well, I wouldn't do anything. I went back and re-read your post, and need to add, yes you can use some of the parts over, if they are still usable. The heads can be reworked. The cylinders can be honed or bored out. I would look around and find a shop that has a good reputation of service to rebuild if that is what you decide.

Just curious, does your Dart have the 273? Why don't you sell it? You should make more money and be better off than trading for a 10 year old bike that needs an engine rebuild. Good luck man. Make sure you really want to get rid of your Dart. I still miss my '67 Impala SS convert almost on a daily basis. I thought I really needed a new pick up truck. Boy, do I kick myself sometimes.[:@]

id keep the dart and look for a different bike, if he was hard enough on it to warrant a motor rebuid you will probably have tranny clutch and primary issues also

hmmm... so if the mechanic advises you to rebuild the motor, he gets a lot of money, right? If he says "nah, it's cool, just ride it!" he gets nada. How many miles? how does it run? does it smoke? does it leak? does it make odd noises? Oh wait, it's a Harley: of course it makes odd noises!

I would recommend replacing the the cam bearings in this Dyna if you buy it. The EVO engine has a gear driven cam, so no cam chain shoe issues in this motor (like the twin cam has), but the cam bearings from factory are INA bearings and my local shop suggests installing Torrington bearings in their place. I had a 96 Dyna and the INA bearings failed in it causing the cam to snap and wrecked a good motor, I only found out about this issue later. This is the only weakness I know of in the EVO design, cover this off and you will have a good ride for many years to come.

Good riding!

Truenorth.
