I know with V&H they stamp the inside of the heat shields with the model number.. you could try this and do a web search.. I hope it helps..

I think it mostly has to do with the overall length of the pipe and the size of the muffler ... that's why the long pipe and 3-1/2" or 4" cans on the touring bikes give that sound pretty consistently ... you are typically going to get a 'harsher' sound out of a straight pipe or a shorter pipe that doesn't have a chamber in which the sound resonates ....

Doesn't mean the performance might not be there, or--to some anyway--it doesn't sound as good ... just different ....

I've thought a lot about it myself .... I'm not super dissatisfied with the sound of mine, just want to improve on it ... my approach is I have a big can (touring muffler) I am about to put on once I 'crack the nut' of how to mount it ....

It sounds a little funny at cruising speed. sounds like crap on decel.. I checked the clamps on the shields and flanges, nothing wrong there. Pulled the heat shields, no cracks in the pipes whatsoever.. Did a compression test just for GP.. everything is fine.. Runs smooth at idle and sounds nice.. Like I said just on decel does it really sound bad.. with me in the driver seat maybe I am just hearing normal sound from it..If I have a buddy drive it and I stand nearby and listen on decel would it make a difference? I like the looks of them especially on the dyna frame. I think I might step up to V&H big shots, radius or side shots.. I want loud, obnoxious, and good performance. I am open to other brands but a 2 to1 not an option for me. I hate the way they look..

I think the easiest thing for the OP to try first would be a set of V&H quiet baffles. They deepened the tone of my sideshots
