Dyna Pipes vs. Softail Pipes question
Whats the difference between an aftermarket set of pipes for a 1996 FXDWG Vs. a 1996 softail Springer?? Just asking because my brother has 2 or 3 sets of aftermarket pipes that came off of his springer... I know the front pipes should be the same..... Im guessing that the main difference would be the mounting brackets....

The mounting brackets for the Softail attach at the lower rear of the frame ...
The mounting brackets for the Dyna attach at the lower rear of the transmission ...
This is because the "B" series motors used in the Softails are 'counterbalanced' to eliminate (reduce) vibrations; and therefore, are hard-mounted directly to the frame ...
The "A" series motors used in Dynas are not counterbalanced--and therefore, give off more vibrations ... for that reason, they are rubber mounted to the Dyna frame ...
If the Dyna's pipes were to be mounted to the frame, the vibrations transmitted to the pipes would break something--the pipes, the bracket, the frame, the exhaust mounting studs in the heads, etc. ("the weakest link") ... that's why, if you are going to try to fabricate a mount for your exhaust, you should try to mount it to the motor/trans assembly ....
The pipes themselves should fit, as the motors exterior dimensions are identical ... one of the key considerations is the oil filler/dipstick .... Since the Softail oil bag is up under the seat (vice under the motor trans assembly), sometimes the rear pipe on Softail head pipes draws forward in a position that would prohibit their use on a Dyna for all practical intents and purposes ....

BTW, the Touring models use the "A" series motor, but their mufflers typically mount to an isolated bracket that hangs on the bottom of the saddlebag bracket rail under the bags ....
I am now sporting a pipe made for Touring models ... a Paughco 2-into-1 ....
I had a mount fabricated that bolts to the stock mounting bracket ....
