Default Parts to buy for fork service

What parts are replaced in a fork service?

I ordered a pair of intiminators and some new fork oil. My bike has 18k miles on it and so it's right about due for the 20k fork service. I plan to do the fork service together with the intiminator install. I asked Brian at Ricor what parts should be replaced (I was thinking the seals) and he said the seals and bushings. Can I get a part number confirmation please?

2006 FXDBi

- Oil Seal: 46514-01
- Slider Bushing: 46080-01

[my best guesses looking at parts manual]

There are three parts labelled "seal", those being the Oil Seal, Dust Seal, and Spacer Seal. Should I just replace the oil seal?

Also more then one part labeled bushing, I have "bushing guide" and "slider bushing" as listed above.

Should I also order new O-rings (46508-01) , or will they likely be re-usable?

Thanks for the help, and I plan to follow the procedure outlined here:

I'd replace the oil seal for sure. The other parts only if they look worn. The 49mm forks take 26.6 oz of oil on each side. Can't help you with the part number because I'm out of town and away from my manual. But I replaced mine once when I installed chrome sliders and then replaced one of those last week because I developed a leak. Just walked in and told the parts guy I needed an oil seal for an 07 FXDC and he grabbed me the right part. I didn't need to p/n. Seal and 2 bottles of fork oil was less than 20 bucks even at a dealer.

Since you don't have the p/n, I take it you don't have a service manual? Be sure to get the correct torque settings and use them when you put everything back together.

If you bought the intiminators from Ricor, chances are two large bottles of amsoil 10w syn fork oil will be in the box as well. It'll be more than enough to refill your forks.

If you get the fork oil at the dealer, the bottles are ~13oz ea so you'd need 4 bottles total. two for each fork leg.

I would definitely check the bushings at the bottom of the fork tube. I know mine @ 13-14k miles were slightly worn. I'll probably tear it down again later this year to do a service on it.

You will need a 12mm allen socket. I got mine from Napa. Napa 12mm allen socket p/n: NPT 615312

I used a 2' x 2" I.D. piece of sched 40 pvc. Use that as your fork seal driver.

of all the services this is the one I dread the most. I bet your fork oil will be all kinds of nasty once you drain. Have fun and watch your eye when you unscrew the top of the fork....it is spring loaded.

John, there isn't anything to it.

Thanks all. I wasn't sure if I needed:

"BUSHING GUIDE" (46516-01) [called Bushing in service manual]
and/or
"BUSHING, slider" (46080-01) [called slider bushing in service manual]

It looks like the slider bushing is a bit attached to the very bottom of the fork tube, and the bushing (a.k.a bushing guide) is a split ring separated from the oil seal by a thin spacer.

These manuals don't even use consistent names for the same part...

Thanks,
Dan

Mac, both bushings are replaceable. Neither of them are permanently attached to the fork tube.

Thanks Vic. (it's making sense now) I haven't checked prices yet, but it would be smart to have both in hand in case either is worn.

Be careful on how much oil you install. Some of ricors kits use a different quantity of fork oil vs the factory specs
