I did the same exact thing. Had my Sportster for 6 months, 3500 miles. Og course, the Ride for Free incentive helped me to decide to trade it (I got MSRP on my trade-in),but I was already thinking about a bigger bike before they came out with that incentive.
Go for the Dyna, you'll love it! And go sit on one of the new WGs, to me, they sit really low.

So I count 8 people so far voting for the Dyna?

I didn't even know how to turn a bike on when I went to the dealer. Sat down on all the bikes, decided the Fat Bob was for me, and ran with it.

The Sportster is in its element as a bar-hopped or city commuter. If you have ANY inclination towards touring or riding with passengers or anything else...get the Dyna.

Step 1 - test ride them both.

" I dont want to buy a Dyna that will overpower me or a Sportster I will outgrow "

Buy a 10 speed bike then ....

I had my Sportster 1200 custom for 4 years and thought about what bike I was going to get next for the 4 yrs I had it. Bought a Street Bob last month and am in 7th heaven, I'm 5'7" and find the Sreet Bob easier to handle than the Sporty. Buy the Dyna!

Look on the threads, bunch a bikes for sale...

If youre a savvy shopper, you might get away with buying both a used sporty, and a used dyna for the cost of a new dyna..

Then your problems is solved.
