I personally prefer having a tach, max RPM is around 6k, but don't make a habit of it. I try to run around 2500-3000 cruising. I tend to shift around 3200, when I am just cruising. I vary depending on the ride and who I am riding with.

my rev limiter is set at 6200.

I shift at about 6000.

your last question -

generally speaking, if you have to ask if you need a tach -

you don't need one.

Got one, cruise around at 28-3000, shift at 45-4700 when riding like it's stolen, limiter set at 6200.

Again, limiter set at 6200. Have to watch the tach or i will hit rev limiter too quick in lower gears.

I put a Tach on both my bikes like to cruise about 3000-3500 have the shift lite set at 4500 for economy but they will hit the chip at 6200 try to stay far from that. The Dyna spins up faster than the Softail with the same mods. All bikes should come with tachs I can tell my speed and what gear I am in with just a glance.
