I got the tach on my Low Rider. 70 mph is 3000 rpm. If I was wringing her out I would not shift above 5000 rpm ever, but thats a stage 1, 80 inch evo.

Probably the best mod done to my bike.

With just a stage 1 and stock motor I usually don't shift past 5000 cuz the power drops off at about 5300 rpm.

My 08 bagger has a tach and I only look at it when I cruising on the highway. Still amazed that I'm crusing at such a low RPM.

My 02 Softail does not have a tach and I never wonder what my RPM is. You can usally tell how fast you're going and the RPM just my the tone of your pipes.

IMO - tachs are not necessary.

Looking at getting one of those Dakota Digital "plug-and-play" direct replacement speedometer/tachometer combo unit for my Super Glide. It has a lot of nice features in it.

your last question -

generally speaking, if you have to ask if you need a tach -

you don't need one.

Mine is also set at 6200 RPM, I shift (when gunning it) between 4800-5000, but I know from my dyno sheets that mine is at peak torque at about 4400 RPM, and I know from riding it that it seems to quit pulling at 5000 RPM, just normal cruising, I shift around 3500, and cruise around 2700-3000

It's a Speedway micro digital tach...Phat Performance sells 'em as well as alot of other online vendors.

I like that it's not noticeable on the bike, but it's a very easy to see bright red read out.
