Question Cam/timing cover

I'm thinking about replacing my chrome engine covers with either grey or black covers . If I buy grey ones , they'll be painted black , but anyway.... I had a friend tell me I couldn't just swap out cam covers with out shimming my cams to match the clearance of the new cam cover . In other words , this is not just a direct swap . Is that true ? Is every cam cover perfectly matched to it's particular engine ? I've never heard of that . ????

Probably thinking evo. The camshaft outer bushing is part of the cam cover. Not so on a twinkie.

ya know, you could take the chrome covers off the bike and have em all powdercoated wrinkle black(or gloss or whatever). Very low cost this way over buying new covers.

I actually am considering that . But I hate the thought of down time . If I do that , it will be over the winter .
