Howdy..new guy here and I pick up my new Super Glide this week. I am having forward controls installed. I am wondering if this setup is the best for longer rides? Maybe I should keep a set of pegs installed in the stock position so I can alter my leg position on trips?

What say you??

 

I'm 6'4" and rode for years with only forward controls and always thought that was the only way to go, but now I hate forward controls. Of course to each his own but I feel more in control with the stock location and it enables you to stand up if you hit a pot hole. The feet forward position makes me feel like I have to hold myself up using arm muscles on long trips. It's tireing.

 

The thing I did was install the forwards and use those for almost all my normal riding but save the mid peg supports and a cheap set of pegs. Any time I plan a long ride bolt the supports back on and use the mid pegs and forwards to move around and not get so stiff. Plus just to bolt up the mid brackets is very quick

 

I like my forward controls but you do have more control with mids imo. There is a lot of information on this board about forwards and leaving the mid pegs on. If you decide to do it, make sure you fold em up so they don't catch your leg and they dump you when you come to a stop. I like my legs streched out and I'm 6'.

 

Thanks..sounds like good advice to keep some pegs in the stock position..folded up. Hey, if I don't like the forwards..they come off. The stock position was a bit cramped for me on the test ride. I am 5 ft 10. I sat on the Wide Glide and figured that position would be the same on the Super Glide I have.

 

I have the new Wide Glide w/foreward controls. I switched the pegs out for some adjustable ones from Joker Machine and love it. 400 miles trip was done in comfort. A Sundowner seat also made a big difference over the stock for seating position and comfort.

 

Keep the mids. As said earlier, its great to be able to move you feet around
on those long runs..

 

I had always wanted forwards on my Dyna and re mounted the stock mid pegs after I was finished. Never used the mid pegs, plus I mounted the Wide Glide front heat shield. The mid peg brackets look like they clear the new shield with ease, but with suspension flex, I ruined the $90.00 shield. Bought a new shield and dropped the mid pegs. Never looked back. If I were to go on a LONG trip, I could probably grind out enough clearance under the mid peg brackets, but the forwards are plenty comfortable to me, plus they clean up the appearance IMO. Fred

Also look at heel raiser pegs or switchblades they allow you to move your foot position very nice for long rides.

 

Army eod if you are having the dealer put them on there is a good chance they will take the mid shifter out of the primary if they do you will have to remove the entire primary if you go back to mid controls. So if you even think you may go back to mid controls you may want to have that left in the bike and a chrome cap cover put over it. But when the dealer does the change out for you tell them you want all your parts back and if you think you will possibly go back to mids you may want to tell them you want the mid shifter left in the bike for this reason. That is why they charge so much to change them out.
