I think to each his own. I have forwards and I'm only 5'9". It's probably a good idea to keep the mids if you like that position. I had to get rid of the mids because I found myself only using the front brake with mids. It was very uncomfortable for me.
On my '10 WG I actually extended the stock forward controls out 3" more with the Kuryakyn 9049 kit. I love it. It put my legs right where I wanted them. Next is a new set of pegs with some kind of heel support to change foot position. Yeah, standing up is a PITA, but it is still doable.
Installed a set of highway pegs on the engine guard. For a change of position on long trips I put my heel on the forward pegs and rest the toe portion of boots on highway pegs.
There's definitely a difference. I rode other bikes for years without forwards. I think I have to get used to them, and they do tire my inner thighs. I suppose I will get used to that.
Funny thing is that my highway pegs that I had were just about perfect. The forwards are a bit closer.
I had mids with highway pegs for a while and found that I was very crunched up when using the mids. My knees were too high compared to my upper legs and was very uncomfortable. I then learned to downshift with my feet on the highway pegs. I also used the rear brake with my feet on the highway pegs. Then I added the forwards and found it better but not as comfortable as with the heel rests. They have made a world of difference. They were adjusted too low at first. I was scraping them on the ground. I adjusted them up just a little and now I am completely comfortable. I would recommend them to anybody.
