yeah problem is they won't do 10% of that stuff. You will get an oil change and they may even wash it before you pick it up but I bet if you were a fly on the wall you'd see a happy tech getting paid fat and doing nothing. I'm sure not all techs are that way but after 20 years as an auto tech I can tell you stuff like that happens ALL the time in the car world.

GET the SERVICE MANUAL about $70 a great investment, and do the work yourself, you know that the work is done right and a sense of accomplishment to top it off

enjoy

if you read your manual, as well as the smaller print on most HD maintenance requirements, the first 1K Pm check is necessary for warranty reasons...

Dont ask me, I dont know why, but so far ive read it in 4 places.

Doesnt mean it'll void your warranty, just saying thats whats written. If this is your first scoot. take it to your MOCO till your comfortable doing the PM's your self.

I just did the Oil change, and Tomorrow Im doing the Transmission. Its, not that hard.

I agree with crzylgzz. Do what you feel comfortable with. Oil changes are easy. Other stuff is not that bad if you have a manual and the time. Some people like a pro to look it over while it's still under warranty. Nothing wrong with either. If you want a Pro to look it over but want to save money look for some independent shops. They pass on their low overhead into savings to you. They also know you do alot of things yourself and give you priceless advice as do the members on this website.

The manual states: The performance of new motorcycle initial service is required to keep warranty in force and to verify proper emission systems operation." See 1.3 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.

When you look at the maintenance schedule at the bottom, it reads:

"1. Should be performed by an authorized Harley Davidson dealer, unless you have the proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified."

As long as you can prove by keeping receipts and show that you followed the Harley service manual when you did your maintenance, there is no way they can void your warranty. I kept all my receipts for the lubricants, oil filter, oil filter wrench, HD manual, belt tension gauge, and photocopied the page out of the manual.

Remember, if you do it yourself.......YOUR NEW BIKE WARRANTY COULD BE NULL AND VOID.

Your warranty doesn't just become null and void totally anyway. If you have a problem with your bike and the dealer won't warranty a claim for a part for some reason that doesn't mean that they can void out your whole warranty just because you changed your own fluids... ridiculous thinking.

KEY WORD IN MY SENTENCE WAS "COULD"..... NOT "WILL". So it's NOT TOTALLY UNTRUE.

If you DONT keep ALL your receipts to PROVE you did what was required.......the MOCO has a much better chance of denying warranty coverage. But hey if you want to be the one fighting a warranty claim, then
have at it. Also notice, their last words were "MECHANICALLY QUALIFIED". Again, another term that the MOCO "COULD" use to deny.
You might think it's all mumbo jumbo.......but LEGALLY it makes a huge difference. I'm just sayin...when it comes to WARRANTY CLAIMS.
And I take exception to your calling my post "RIDICULOUS THINKING".

I think both sides have very valid arguments. But for me, $230 buys a lot more than just a fluids change, it buys $15,000 worth of piece of mind. I realize the manual states...

"1. Should be performed by an authorized Harley Davidson dealer, unless you have the proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified."

But I am not willing to gamble on my warranty with Harley based on a vague statement like that one. I mean if it came down to it, whos to say who is qualified and who isnt? I have also read and been told that the 1k service is the last step in the verification of the assembly being correct and that everything is functioning correctly and is reported to the MoCo. My bike flipped 1000 today, friday it goes in for the first service, and from then on Ill do the rest.

Just my 2 cents

Finally a reason to NOT get a BMW. I've got a friend, 35 + year Harley rider, who can't shut up on how great a ride the BMW is he got last summer.
