Default Need New Rear Tire, What to Expect?

Tread is almost gone on the center. What should I expect the HD dealer to charge to buy/install a tire? Is this a job you'd trust to an indie?

Well I trust my Indy over the local HD dealer anyday here but that is going to vary by area.

Indy charges $50 to remove wheel and mount and balance new tire (rear) and $35 for the front.

Charges me $25 to mount and balance since I remove the wheels my self.

Tire prices vary depending on what you want. The SE 180 was higher and was just over $200 I think.

No idea what local dealer charges

I bought a new D407 Dunlop 170/60R17, for the rear, took my wheel off and took it to a HD dealer. They charged me about 45 bucks to mount and balance. Tire was 155.00 and free shipping.

I'll take it to a local indy next time.... 20 bucks to mount and balance. Still a good price for the tire, tho might let the indy see if he can beat it.

I just bought the stock 170 Dunlop from Motorcycle Superstore for $129 with free
shipping. The local stealer wanted $195 for the same tire, plus $14 sales tax plus
$80 mounting and balancing. That's $290..

I paid $70 to my favorite independent to have it mounted and balanced so I came
out almost $100 ahead of what the dealer would have charged for the identical
product and servicing.

Order a tire and tube online, Take your wheel off and mount it yourself, then take it to get balanced. That's the way I do mine...Save money if you can or want to..
Motorcycle super store seems to have the lowest prices when I need tires and free shipping for orders over $75.00..

My Indie probably does more tires than the local HD dealership. Bought a Metzeler rear for $176 and a Metzeler front for $122. Charged me an hour and a half labor (97.50) to remove, mount and balance both tires. All while I had a burger and a beer at the same location. He also owns the bar his shop is attached to. I love that place....most of the time his shop is opened til 9pm. It makes it easy to get things done after work.

What?! And miss that wonderful dealership service manager know-it-all attitude?

Unless I'm remembering wrong the stock rear is a 160-70-17. I picked up a SE 170-60-17 (wider looking tire than numbers represent) from a dealer for $175 I think cause that is the only place you can get the SE tires from and I didn't like the other 170 tires available. Guy at work charges me $30 to mount and balance it. The do it yourself route does run a few bucks in tools but worth it. They won't cost you anything the next time. And yes the ballpark figure for a dealer to remove and replace a rear is around $300.

Can you post a link to that sale? I can't seem to find the 170/60 and free shipping. Thanks.

Is the Dunlop 407 and the Roadsmart the same tire?
