Talking Oil Change Surprise

So I managed to change the oil on my 07 Street Bob by myself today for the first timeand it all went smooth untill I removed the oil filter. I know I read about it on this forum some where about putting alum foil to catch exess oil but I thought, Nah it wont happen to me. Well about 30 minutes later after I had cleaned up the mess I thought , Why did you not heed the warning from your forum members. So remember take it from me listen to the members when you go do some thing to your bike. They have been there done that. Thanks

Been there--done that!! I just changed the oil last week, and made the same mess. Next time I'm for sure going to get a piece of cardboard folded. Should work like a charm.

Last change I did I punched a hole in the filter with a screwdriver to drain most of the oil from it before removing it.

This also helps to cut down on the mess.

You can get this from Harley (Part Number 63794-10):

Or you can cut a 2 Liter pop bottle into a similar configuration and accomplish the same thing.

Won't using a pop bottle void the warranty?

I put the catch pan under and remove filter slowly. It goes all over hell. I drink 2 more beers, then clean it up. Better than pulling the filter off my Silverado, fukin oil all down my arm....No way round that.

That's why I listed the MoCo option also.
