yeah drain the oil out of the pan, then punch a hole in the filter and drain it out into a funnel you make out of any thing you want...even aluminum foil....or drain it into a plastic bag.

you can also blow into the hole in the oil filter with an air hose to expedite things.

after letting it drain, jam a rag up under the filter best you can, and screw it off. the mess should be minimal.

+2 or 3 , whatever it is up to about punching a hole in the bottom of the filter first. Somebody posted here that the new HD filter drain is s good idea, but interferes with filter wrenches causing a big mess anyway.

I use channel lock pliers for filter removal, or loosen it with the screw driver that I use to punch a hole.
