If you dont plan on riding for a few days, drain the oil pan while the engine is hot, leave the oil plug out with the catch pan under it, then wait 2-3 days to remove the oil filter. All the oil drains from the filter in 2-3 days by gravity.

I think you should add that the bike must be level, not on the side stand, when doing this. Otherwise, there is going to be one very disappointed person when they unscrew the filter.

Oil enters and exits the filter from the right. A bike on sidestand leans left. How does gravity manage to make the oil flow uphill and then down again?

Next time get a can of brakekleen and spray it clean in 30 seconds. Then wash with simple green to remove any residue.

This also helps to cut down on the mess.

I do this every oil change, filter is empty. Pure magic I guess.

I get on the bike and lean to my right for a few minutes while the plug is out. It seems to help get some of that out. Not all of it, but you have less to deal with.
