Default Need a kickstand mod...

I'm only 5'2" and, at times, it is hard for me to upright my bike off of the kickstand. I use the trick of turning the bars to the right, but if it sinks into gravel or something...I still have a hard time with it because my legs are so short. I wish it didn't lean over so far when on the kickstand. My Sportster didn't lean like that and neither does my friend's Heritage. I DO NOT want to lower the bike. Has anyone done a kickstand mod to cure this problem on a Dyna?

I'm sure you could heat the first bend, the one closest to the frame, up with a torch and straighten it out a little to stand the bike more upright. Try to find a longer kickstand that will bolt up. That will in turn cause to more problems. The chrome will be ruined and the kick stand will tuck away under the primary to far making it hard to get to when you want to put it down. One option would be to get on the bike and roll it forward causing the kick stand to go up, whenever you get ready to leave somewhere. Lower profile seat, or what you said you didn't want to do, lower the bike.

You could put a small plate on the bottom of the stand to make it thicker, or go to a low profile rear tire that will also help.

Don't try heating up the kickstand to bend it as that will make the steel it's made from it lose it's "temper" or strength. There are different kickouts out there and there are relocation kits also available that may be able to help you. Putting some sort of pad or biscuit on the foot of the stand may help along with, I don't know, thicker soles on you riding boots maybe?

Be careful doing this not to give too much lift, I sometimes shove a block of wood under the kickstand of my Dyna when I'm working on it. It's just about an inch or so but it can make the bike a bit unstable, to the point where it could on the right surface / road camber topple over to the right. The stand as it is is designed to be stable even on quite a steep camber - hence the reason it seems to lean the bike over a lot. Even on the flat floor of my workshop I use a homemade support that bolts into the frame on the opposite to the block under the stand - just be on the safeside if I'm working on it

Also +1 on the heating of the kickstand, unless you know what you're doing you'll remove the temper out of the metal and weaken it - the Dyna's a heavy bike.

Different seat perhaps? I would steer away from having a longer stand as it could push the pivot center too far right and you may find the bike laying on it's side, then you'd have a really hard time picking it up.

Thanks for the replies. I think mounting a small piece of metal under the kickstand is probably the thing I will go with if it won't interfere with putting the kickstand up. I just need a couple degrees less lean. I ride too far to risk a thinner and, most likely, more uncomfortable seat. I'm just not sure that drilling holes to mount it won't weaken the kickstand?

I know that they make kickstand angle shims that mount behind the stand mounting bracket to change the angle of the stand itself. Not sure if they make one for your particular set up but it may be an option. Check J&P or PM Dr. V TWin.

Before you go off and drill holes in kickstand and try to shim that way... I'd zip tie the metal on there and see how the angle is and if it will work. Then maybe drill and screw, or even better, glue that sucker on
