Angry check your gas tank newbie

well im an army sgt and a spc just bought a 2009 fat bob and he bugs me constantly about riding then dont show up. well at midnite he calls says his bike broke down on the highway and needs me to trailer him home. i go up and hes in the parking lot battery drained sayin it quit and wont stay running. tried to look at it but he didnt want me to touch his new bike, so we load it up next day i take him to the shop 40 miles away to find out hes out of gas. he drove 148 miles and never thought to put gas in it. after i asked and he said it was half a tank.damn newbie

I can see that happening, I know when i ride, i occassionally lose track of how far im driving,,

but 148 mi on a tank,, assuming he was full when he statrted isnt great gas mileage at all.

If he's eating up that much gas on a FatBob, there might be a problem. I get roughly 200-220mi on my tank.

He should have that checked out.

Assuming the tank was full, Assuming that is..

Thats a great story...typical E-4 thats knows everything. But as for the gas, like crzylgzz said, I too get caught up in riding that I will cut it real close...

Have to admit. Got on my 2010 streetbob earlier this week - bike that I have never got to take on the thruway. So off to the thruway I got. Bike has so much power now that I modded it and not familiar with the lights on dash yet so when I thought I was in 6th, light was on telling me to get gas. Luckily I figured it out before I ran out. It can happen. Just isn't too smart.

LOL...I guess as you get older you get wiser. In my teens I ran put of gas maybe twice and had to push the bike several miles to find a gas station. That was a great learning experience to watch your trip odometer and make sure you NEVER have to push that damn bike to find a gas station again.

We had no cell phones to call for help back in the '60's.

When my trip odo gets to 120-130 miles, I'm getting gas for the Street Bob...usually takes 3.3 to 3.6 gals. to fill it up. I like having that extra 35-40 mile reserve range left in the tank just in case.

Not sure I'd wanna spend a lot of road time with him.

I think he's got some other issues goin' on (alcohol or worse).

Live and learn. Guess he has a new nick name- No gas Dumb a$$. I like how the older bikes have a reserve on the petcock. The gas gauge on my new bike is just something else to worry about. I find that I'm getting gas more often because of the gauge.

I bought one of these for my road trips, don't carry it around town, but I figure 1.5 L will get me at least 10 miles to a gas station. It's well sealed and made for carrying gas.
I have a bad habit of passing gas stations when traveling if I have only gone 50-60 miles, then sweating it when it turns out to be another 100 to the next one.

Excellent tip... I had been wondering how to carry a small amount, safely, myself.
