Default 08 Tank on 06 FXDCI

I have an 06 Superglide Custom. Wondering if I can swap out the 06 tank with the 08 tank. While I like the speedo on the bars and the stripped look of the 06 tank, I like the ignition switch lock on the tank that comes on the 08 (and most other models before 08).

Would this be complicated and expensive? Is a bar change required too? Would new wiring be required too since the speedo and ignition are on the tank for 08?

The 08 tank will work on your 06 with no problem, but its going to cost a pretty penny.

I also liked the idea of having the ignition switch on the tank, so I got rid of the fuel gauge and fixed up an ignition switch which would mount in its place.

I spent $514 total for parts not counting the tank. I collected parts over a 7 month period and the speedo was the most expensive part $160.

Bar change is not necessary - just a new top clamp.
That's the least of the $ issues.
As mentioned - count on about $500 in parts not including the tank.
The change is not complicated. The biggest issue will be wiring the idiot lights. The speedo is a direct plugin, but the idiots will need wiring.

Big Parts: new speedo, new console, new top plate, ignition switch, new fuel gage and cap, new idiot cluster. Lots of little parts - gaskets, screws, etc

I just did a tank swap on mine and like others said the parts add up in a hurry. It could of been done cheaper but my parts were $600 not counting the tank. I went with flush mount gauges and the 08SE/WG dash is a little higher. Picked up the tank for $150 then had to have it painted.

One thing to consider would be to use a Low rider/ Street Bob tank with the New WG dash. This is what I did and it gives you the ignition on the dash but will allow you to use your stock 4inch Speedo vs the 5 inch used in the 07+ Customs. Save the cost of a new speedo.

As far as the changing tanks it is pretty easy. To make mine easier I went ahead and bought the wiring harness for a Street bob as well so no wiring of the idiot lights were needed. Everything just plugged in like stock, well worth the extra cost vs trying to splice everything in.

The ignition switch is easy as well. Its a little bit of a pain to get the wiring unplugged from up in the neck but after that you just need to extend the wiring and plug it in to the switch. I ordered my switch from HD and had it keyed to my bike to it takes the same key as the fork lock. They also give you 2 additional keys.

Pic of my set-up
