Default Thoughts on Pitted rocker Arms?

This freakin "spark plug" repair is killin me. Tried to fix it but the fix sucked. Didn't want to buy someone else's jacked-up used heads so I bought new. Installed the Edelbrock heads and when putting the rocker box back on I noticed one of the rockers is pretty pitted. Any thoughts on what causes this? Is 37k miles a little early for such a problem? My ride's been down for two weeks during prime riding season and it's killin me. It looks like it's going to be another week at least. Ugghhh! [:@]
