Default Issues with tank lift?

Hey guys, ever since I saw pics of lifted tanks on the SB, I really liked it. I was over by the local stealership talking with the parts guy about a couple of mods I was planning on doing, and i mentioned doing a tank lift. As soon as I said that, he said "DON'T DO IT!" When I asked why, he told me about a guy that had a tank lift on his bike and after XXXX miles his tank cracked. A lot of money later, he got a new tank and lifted it again. XXX miles later his tank cracked again and was out a lot of money again. This pretty much trashed my idea of raising my tank ever again. Has anyone heard of this or is he blowin smoke? I know a lot of guys on here have done it, im just leary of the idea of buying a new tank. Thanks for the input.

That's gotta be bull$hit. How could the tank crack? All the lift does is move the front mounting point up, was the guy's tank made out of plastic?? I say do it. I just ordered mine yesterday, hopefully no more scraping the hell outta my hand when I'm cleaning the rocker covers.

I've never had any problems with me tank lift as I am sure there are hundreds more on here that would say the same thing.

I'm one of them! Don't sweat it, the lift will not hurt anything.

The lift does cause my tank to vibrate more (and yes my front & rear mounts are white knuckle tight). The only way I can think that this crack would occur (providing the parts guy is not full of sh*t is at the welds where the mount flanges connect to the tank body at the front of the tank. But even then I'm skeptical that it happened to TWO tanks. I call BS. I have jackyls kit and love it.

I remember hearing a similar story on this forum, has something to do with the quality of the lift causing the mounting ears on the tank to crack at the welds. Was about a year ago, but I did read it here somewhere.
That said, I have had the lift on mine for over a year, no problems. Like anything, you install it or build it wrong and you can have problems.

After a buddy of mine saw the tank lift I had, he got one for his WG. 2 years later he traded in his WG for a Road Glide. The dealer put his WG on the floor for sale minus the tank lift. We joked they took it off to put on one of their bikes because they also took the parade fan off that THEY installed...
