Exclamation My frame is leaking GAS....PICS

So I filled up last night on my way home. Pulled the bike into the garage and went into the living room (The 2 rooms are next to each other). After a bit I smelled gas and went to the garage to find a large puddle of gas under my bike. The petcock was dry, the fuel lines were dry, the carb was dry, the bowl drain tube was dry. Couldn't find it in the low light last night so I was looking today and found my leak....

That hole in the rectangular cross member has gas coming out at an alarmingly fast rate. And it's fresh gas, not old stale stuff. WHY THE HELL IS THERE GAS IN MY FRAME!?!?!

Does anybody know what the heck is going on here?!

If the fuel valve was closed, and you didn't overfill the tank, the only thing I can think of is a leak in the gastank.

If I remember well, I think I saw a factory recall note somewhere on the www for Dyna's having leaking tanks caused by the throttle cables rubbing against the gastank.

I'll do a search for you and let you know later on....

Sounds like you have a tank leak that is dripping down into the frame. Have you looked at the welds on the mounting tabs?
If you can't easily find it, I would suggest taking the tank off for a thorough inspection.

Here's what I found up till now:

http://www.automotix.net/autorepair/.../10448-recall/

YouTube video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCG0ccDYStA

http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/rec...cboMake=HARLEY DAVIDSON&cboModel=FXR&cboSortOrder=rec_launch_date &cboAscDesc=ASC&PageSize=10&tx=&Search=Search

My advise:

take off the tank, remove the fuel valve and put some pressure on it with an air pump to find out if thare are any leaks.

Once you have removed the fuel tank you'll be able to check all the fuel lines for wear and tear and little cracks.

Maybe just over filled with gas? Has the leak stopped now? My old 92 FXR used to leak from the overflow vent if I filled it up to the neck and if I remember right the overflow tube ran down the frame and exited by the kickstand. Hope this helps.

This is '93 so that recall doesn't apply. I'm going to go check my tank now. Be back in a few with the results.

HALLELUJAH!!! I completely forgot about that tube! I crammed the tank as full of gas as I could last night. I just traced the line and guess what!?

It goes right into the cross member where the gas is coming from Thanks a million Hogcity and everyone else. I was sweatin bricks over this one.

Glad you've found out... as said before, if it hadn't been caused by overfilling, the only thing I could think of was a leak.
